MSL’s project really did go in the direction of its name.

After a series of disappointing results, Team South CSGO, known simply as “South” have announced that they are disbanding. Their roster was unveiled just 20 days ago, and after they built up hype around it, disappointing is an understatement. You can read my report on that announcement from August 25th here.

The Danish squad only got to play 8 matches together, winning 4 and losing 4. They were never able to perform up to par let alone expectations on the server, losing to Tier 3 teams. They also failed to qualify to tournaments and lost out early on in all of the ones they competed in.

Funspark ULTI 2021 Europe Regional Series 3 Closed Qualifier

Placed 5–8th.

V4 Future Sports Festival 2021 Open Qualifier

Placed 3rd–4th.

IEM Fall 2021 Europe Open Qualifier 4

Placed 5–8th.

Malta Vibes Knockout Series 2

Placed 25–40th.

On the surface, while it may seem like a solid 3rd–4th placement, it’s quite the disappointment when you realize that it was an open qualifier for a lower tier tournament.

South’s last of the disappointing results came at a 1–2 loss to Spirit Academy.

Frederik “Fessor” Sorensen was the first to leave the team just several hours before the entire team followed his lead.

“I’ve decided to leave project South because I didn’t feel it was the right place for me. Thank you for the short time, and good luck further!”

Unfortunately, however, there was no “further.”

Official departure announcement (Yes really, it was done in a half-way character limit tweet)

Team leader Mathias “MSL” Lauridsen announced his free agency and is now open for offers and is looking for “a stable organization where he can build something strong over time.”

Jesper “TENZKI” Mikalski and Philip “aizy” Aistrup plan to remain in Counter-Strike and are also available for offers.

As for JUGi, he has not yet made a statement as of writing. This will surely hit the 24 year old hard as he has failed to perform well on his past 3 teams (South, Astralis, and North). It is unclear where he will be headed, but expect anything.

The reactions to the announcement were mixed, with some casuals thinking it’s oh-my-god-so-hilarious to the toughest of keyboard warriors on Twitter who were (rightfully) upset. Unrightfully , the incoming hate was directed at MSL. A lot of the blame was placed on him for not being able to run the team as he promised.

Scores and stats are taken from Liquipedia and HLTV. You can view the full results and statistics for South individually and as a team here on HLTV.

And well, they were once North and once South, who is to say we won’t see a Team East or Team West announcement on Twitter in a month or so?
